Studying Arabic and Quran in Cairo: What Students Already Know

The student visa gives legal residency for the whole family. And Nasr City has more Islamic institutes per square kilometre than anywhere else on earth.

For thousands of English-speaking Muslims, Egypt means one thing: access. Access to the language. Access to scholars. An environment where studying Islam isn't a weekend activity — it's the fabric of daily life.

Cairo, and Nasr City in particular, has become the global hub for English-speaking Islamic education. Here's what you need to know before committing.

Why Cairo?

Al-Azhar University, founded in 970, is the world's reference institution for Islamic learning. Dozens of institutes for foreign students have naturally developed around it.

Add a cost of living 4–5× lower than in Europe or the US, and a growing English-speaking Muslim community — the result is unique in the world.

The main institutes

Al Ibaanah: officially authorised by the Egyptian government to teach. Separate classes for men and women, children's programme. Renowned for stability. The first name that comes up in testimonials from resident families.

Dar At Tashîh: specialised in Quranic recitation correction. For those with a base who want to deepen their Quran sciences specifically.

Project Tilawa: intensive sessions designed for Western Muslims. 40 days, 5 hours/day. Accommodation included. For those who want rapid progress before deciding on a long-term move.

There are others. Quality varies significantly.

The advantage nobody highlights

Enrolling in a recognised institute gives you a student visa. That visa grants annual legal residency in Egypt — not just for you, but for your whole family. Renewable. It's the most-used and least expensive route for relocating families.
